University of California (UC)
The University of California (UC) was the first public university to start in the state of California. There are 9 undergraduate universities, and 2 additional graduate universities (UC Hastings and UC San Francisco) for those in the medical and legal fields, respectively. Each campus and its student-body are unique. Each has its own history and traditions, and can offer a variety of study focuses for its students. To begin the research to figure out if one of these universities is right for you, begin HERE.

Tips from Dr. Haddy:
- After the you have finished their regular CSU applications and their EOP applications, you should start on the UC application.
- Like the CSU application, the UC app goes online Oct 1st – but unlike the CSU app, the UC app can’t be submit until Nov 1st (which is why students should do the CSU stuff at the beginning of Oct and get that out of the way).
- You can fill out the UC app and have it ready to go – it just won’t let you submit until Nov 1.
......A few difference between the UC and CSU applications
- Students will also get 4 application waivers for the UC application.
- They will only have to submit the UC application once.
- There is a page that asks students about scholarships. If they click on the tabs they will see a long list of various descriptors. They should check all of the descriptors that fit them. Based on what they indicate, the UCs will send the students information on scholarships that they might be qualified/eligible for.
- On the CSU application, students don’t have to report the original grade if they made up the class. On the CSU application, they have to report all of their grades – even those that they made up.
- There is no separate EOP application. The students are asked in the application if they are interested in apply for EOP and then asked to write a few sentences for why they think they should be in EOP. That is it.
- The UC application does not take letters of recommendation, but it does have those two essay prompts.
§ I tell students to fill out the rest of the application and keep working on their essays on the side. When their application is ready, the last thing they will do is cut and paste the essays into the application and then they can submit.
- There is a space for a 3rd ‘essay’ on the application. This is the ‘Is there anything else we need to know about you?’ essay. This is where students can address any specific issues (why they got a D in that one class – or why their grades dropped that one semester – it is also a good place to note that we offer a limited number of Honors/AP courses, so taking 2 or 3 AP courses in their four years here is somewhat maxing out their opportunities).
